Made-to-Order vs Bespoke Engagement Rings: Whatβs the Difference?
Share
A made-to-order engagement ring starts with an existing Carat House design and is made for you once you order. A bespoke (or custom) engagement ring changes the design itself, or starts from something entirely new. Both are made specifically for you, to the same standard. The difference is where the design begins and how much of it changes.

What is a made-to-order engagement ring?
A made-to-order engagement ring is an existing design, made specifically for you after you order. It is not a finished ring taken from stock.
You begin with a design you love from our engagement ring collection and choose its specifications on the product page. The price updates with each selection, so you see the final price straight away.
| You choose | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Metal | 18ct gold or platinum |
| Centre diamond | Natural or lab-grown, in your chosen carat weight |
| Finger size | Made to your size from the start, not resized after |
| Diamond specification | A specific colour or clarity, available on request |
Once confirmed, your ring is made, checked, certified and shipped within two to three weeks. If you have already found the design you love, it is often the most direct path.

When does made to order become bespoke?
Made to order is a starting point, not a limitation. If you love an existing design but want something outside its listed options, speak with us.
Some requests leave the design itself unchanged, such as a specific diamond colour or clarity. Others go further.
The line is simple: are we changing the specifications of the design, or the design itself?
If the structure of the ring changes, the project becomes bespoke. That might mean asking us to:
- alter the band thickness
- add cathedral shoulders
- introduce a hidden halo
- add a European shank
- change the setting height or profile
- redesign the basket or gallery
- alter the ringβs proportions
- design a wedding band shaped to follow your engagement ring
These are no longer product options. They change how the piece is designed and built, which is where CAD development comes in.
Begin with what inspires you
Bespoke can begin with a Carat House design you would like to evolve, or with something entirely your own. Clients often bring us:
- a photograph or saved image
- a sketch
- details from several different pieces
- a specific diamond shape
- a vintage or heirloom reference
- an idea they would like help shaping into a ring
Whatever you bring becomes the brief for your design. You will see it take shape in CAD before anything is made.

Andromeda, Redesigned in a Full Pear Tennis Setting
Our Andromeda necklace was designed with illusion pear-shaped links. A client loved the piece but wanted to change one fundamental element: in place of the illusion links, full-size pear-shaped stones.
The identity of Andromeda remained. The structure changed.
So we developed a new CAD around that request.

Left: the original Andromeda, with illusion pear links. Right: the redesign, with full-size pear stones.
They didnβt need a blank page. They started with a piece they loved and changed the one part they wanted to make their own.

Bespoke isnβt a higher tier of craftsmanship. The making is the same; what changes is the design work before it.
How does pricing differ?
Made-to-order pricing
Metal, carat weight and diamond origin are built into the product listing, and the price updates as you select them. If you know the design you want, you know the cost straight away.
Bespoke pricing
With bespoke, the finished design may not exist yet. Clients often come to us with two things: an idea and a budget.
βThis is the style of ring I want, and this is the budget Iβd like to work within.β
We then develop the design, stone, metal and proportions around those priorities. The final cost depends on:
| Factor | How it affects the piece |
|---|---|
| Centre stone | Origin, size and specifications can significantly affect price |
| Metal | Metal choice and total metal weight influence cost |
| Design complexity | More detailed structures require additional design and making |
| Additional stones | Hidden halos, pavΓ© and side stones add to stone count |
| Ring dimensions | Band width, setting and proportions affect material and making |
| Custom components | Bespoke baskets, galleries or matching bands require new CAD work |
Bespoke isnβt automatically more expensive. A made-to-order ring with a high-specification natural centre diamond may cost considerably more than a bespoke ring built around a lab-grown diamond. The choice between natural and lab-grown diamonds often moves the price more than the design route does.
Made-to-order pricing begins with an established design. Bespoke pricing develops alongside it.
Which option is right for you?
Neither is better. It depends on what you have already found and how much you want to change.
Already found the design you love on our website? Made to order may be all you need.
Love the design but want to change the ring itself? Thatβs where bespoke begins.
Have an idea that doesnβt exist yet? Weβll design it with you.
You donβt need to know which you need before speaking with us. If youβre still at the start of choosing an engagement ring, a consultation is a good place to begin.
How the bespoke process works
Carat House operates entirely online. Whether youβre looking for engagement rings in Sydney or live elsewhere in Australia, the full process can be completed remotely, with your approval at every major stage.
1. Online design consultation
Every bespoke project begins with an online consultation. We look at your inspiration and discuss what you want the finished piece to achieve.
We want to understand not only what you like, but why. You might love the profile of one ring, the basket of another and the proportions of a third. Those details set the direction of the design.
We also discuss your timeframe, so every stage is planned around the date that matters to you.
2. Setting, structure and stone proportions
From there, we move into the structure of the piece: setting style, band width, profile, setting height, shoulders, basket, and how a wedding band will sit alongside it.
We consider the centre stone at the same time. A well-resolved design treats the stone, setting and proportions as one.
3. CAD design, refined until itβs right
Your design is then built in CAD (computer-aided design): a precise 3D model showing every dimension, proportion and detail before anything is made. We refine it with you until it is exactly as you want it. Nothing is cast until you have approved the design.

4. Optional 3D wax model
Once the CAD is approved, you can choose to receive a physical wax model, a chance to hold the design before it exists in metal. You can check its scale, profile and proportions in three dimensions, which many clients find easier than judging a render on screen.
The wax model is $100 with free delivery Australia wide, and the full amount comes off the final cost of your ring.

5. Stone selection
With the design approved, we select the centre stone.
Every shortlisted diamond comes to you with its laboratory certificate, a 360Β° video and a tweezer video, so you choose your stone by how it looks, not only how it grades.
Centre diamonds above 0.30ct are independently certified: GIA for natural diamonds, IGI for lab-grown. Alternative certification can be arranged on request.

6. Making and quality assurance
Once the design and stone are final, the piece is cast in your chosen metal, then filed, polished, set and finished. The standard is the same whether your ring began as a made-to-order design or a bespoke concept.
Quality control isnβt the final step. It is part of every step.
| Stage | Quality consideration |
|---|---|
| CAD | Proportions, structure and design feasibility |
| Casting | Integrity of the raw metal piece |
| Filing and finishing | Shape, symmetry and surface refinement |
| Stone setting | Security, alignment and setting quality |
| Final polish | Surface finish and detail |
| Completed jewellery | Final quality assurance before certification and dispatch |

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between made-to-order and bespoke engagement rings?
A made-to-order engagement ring begins with an existing Carat House design and is made after you select its specifications. A bespoke engagement ring involves developing or substantially changing the design itself.
Is made to order the same as ready made?
No. A ready-made ring already exists. A made-to-order ring is made specifically for you after you place your order.
Can I modify an existing Carat House engagement ring?
Yes, and we encourage it. Every Carat House piece is made to order, which means any design can be made your own. Changes to specifications, such as diamond colour or clarity, remain made to order. Changes to the structure, such as the band, setting, shoulders or basket, become a bespoke design.
Can I design my own engagement ring from scratch?
Yes. A bespoke project can begin with a reference image, a sketch, several inspirations or simply an idea discussed in your online consultation.
Can I make changes to the CAD design?
Yes. We refine the CAD with you until the design is right, and only then move to the next stage.
Can I see the ring before it is made?
Yes. Once the CAD is approved, you can choose a physical wax model to check the proportions and form of the design. The wax model is $100, deducted in full from the final cost of your ring.
How long does a custom engagement ring take?
Allow approximately seven weeks from first consultation to delivery: approximately two weeks of design and CAD, up to three weeks to make once approved, then 7β9 business days for delivery. Made-to-order rings ship within two to three weeks and arrive 7β9 business days later.
Can I design a bespoke engagement ring online from anywhere in Australia?
Yes. Consultations, CAD revisions, stone selection and approvals are all completed online, and finished jewellery is delivered free and fully insured Australia-wide.
